Our Signature Blend - A Tradition since 2012.

Sprout

Sprout was designed by us with durability and flexibility in mind, with the unrivaled quality of an All-American made yarn.

Purposely using American wool for the known ethical sheep growth & wool processing, we keep the wool state-side for the entire process.

The blend, size, and twist are specific to Sprout...

  • We start with Domestic (USA) grown wool, from the wool pool, with a particular micron count that gives the yarn a soft handle, yet able to with stand common uses.
  • A little nylon is added just to aid the durability (making it usable as a Sock yarn). With only 10% nylon, you cannot feel it, leaving the yarn to seem like a 100% wool.
  • The wool is super-washed (or made washable) so you can machine wash it for easier care.
  • Combed for full worsted spinning (makes it more durable, much less "pokey" than others, and a thicker feel). Fully Worsted Spun yarns are desirable and less popular.
  • An over-twist on the plying makes splitting difficult and makes the yarn stronger.

Today, Sprout is manufactured exclusively for The Fiber Seed. This has been a staple yarn for more than a decade now, we are not changing anytime soon. Over the years we have had a few additional bases, but this is the one that gave us our reputation.

Yarn Size Standards

The standard make up of yarn is not an exact thing. There are multiple variables that are considered when making yarn... such as fiber content and crimp, ply size, tightness of twist, the amount of plys, worsted vs woolen spun, etc. As you can begin to imagine, it is necessary to put a range on a size. For further size details, see this Craft Yarn Council chart.
